Sport: ‘Jersey must learn from Team GB approach’

British athletes exceeded expectations to win 27 gold medals in Rio, and their total tally of 67 surpassed the figure achieved during the home Games in 2012.

Just one gold medal was claimed 20 years ago at the Atlanta Games, and the drastic rise in success has largely been accredited to increased financial support behind the scenes.

However, with cuts to sports funding in Jersey set to be debated as part of the States’ Medium Term Financial Plan, Obarska hopes the ‘feel good factor’ created by the Olympics will influence the allocation of resources as Gold Coast 2018 approaches.
