Rugby: Festive first for Reds

Following the release of the 2016/17 Championship schedule earlier this month sides were left to decide on the days and times of their home games for the upcoming campaign, and officials at St Peter have since penned in a tie on 1 January – against old rivals Ealing Trailfinders.

The match follows a Boxing Day clash away to Bedford Blues, and head coach Harvey Biljon says the decision to play on the first day of 2017 will give both players and fans a better opportunity to enjoy the festive break.

‘Unfortunately the games either side of New Year don’t fall the way we want them to fall, so having the game on New Year’s Day gives the players the opportunity to have an extra day off after Bedford,’ he said.

‘It also gives the fans the chance to enjoy some rugby on New Year’s Day. It’s usually a quiet one after New Year’s Eve, but in my opinion it can now be a great day out.’
