Football: Little bows out unbeaten

The former Aston Villa boss confirmed his decision after being given time by the Jersey Football Association to consider his options, and will revert back to his original role of director of football until at least the end of 2016.

Little went unbeaten during his four-game tenure as manager, guiding the Islanders to success against the Royal Navy FA, Panjab FA and Essex and Suffolk Border League before masterminding the hosts’ 1-0 triumph against Guernsey at Springfield in May. But, with commitments at relegated Villa now high on the agenda as they seek an immediate return to the Premier League, the 62-year-old feels a Jersey-based coach will be better suited to take the men’s side forward.

‘I don’t think I’ve ever hidden from the fact that I couldn’t give the time,’ he said. ‘My endeavour to win was always there, but I was always the first to admit that I needed to do more.

‘The JFA felt they had the best chance of winning the Muratti by asking me to look after the team, and we achieved what we set out to achieve. I’m delighted it worked out – I don’t think I would have been given a month’s thinking time afterwards if it hadn’t gone the way it went.’
