Golf reaction: Stokes ‘over the moon’ with Island title

In a repeat of last year’s final, La Moye teenager Stokes reversed the result of 2015 on a blustery day in Grouville, twice coming from behind to claim his first Island title having progressed to the shootout with a 3 and 1 semi-final triumph against three-time winner Gavin O’Neill.

‘I’m over the moon,’ said Stokes. ‘Obviously I played Alex last year and he got the better of me, but I felt like I played much better this year – I kept it much cooler.

‘Even though I went down a couple of times I kept my head up, because I knew I could do it.’

Royal Jersey’s Guelpa, who reached a third consecutive final thanks to a 2 and 1 success against Trevor Gray, was left to rue missed opportunities on the greens.

‘The better man won,’ he said. ‘I didn’t deserve to win – I didn’t hole enough putts, which was the difference in the end, and Jason held it together well coming down the stretch.”

Stokes will play Guernsey champion Steve Mahy in the Channel Islands final in Guernsey on 19 June.
