Sport: ‘Jersey must follow UK’s lead on funding’

As part of the government’s autumn spending review – the details of which were released yesterday – UK Sport has been handed a 29 per cent increase in funding in the build-up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. And, as Jersey attempts to continue the buzz created during the 2015 NatWest Island Games, there are calls for local sport to be given similar attention when its own budget is reviewed in September 2016.

£750,000 has been set aside for sport in Jersey in 2016 - a figure which is due to be reviewed in September

‘We’ve only got a year’s budget, so we’ve got to make sure over the next year that we get it maintained or increased after that.

‘The UK government can clearly see the benefit of sport, as 29 per cent is a lot, and we’ve got to continue our legacy here too after the Island Games. The whole atmosphere here during the Games was such that we don’t want to lose it, and it will help save money elsewhere, like Health, by having a healthy body, healthy mind and by keeping kids off the street.’
