Football: Match abandoned after ‘keeper knocked out

Smith was caught by an opponent’s elbow as he attempted to claim the ball from a corner kick and concern was expressed immediately as he fell to the floor and then remained motionless.

An ambulance was called and the JT employee was taken to the General Hospital where he underwent a CT scan, which revealed no internal bleeding.

The long delay between the ambulance being called, arriving and then attending to the injured keeper on the pitch resulted in the game being abandoned by referee David Moore early in the second half.

St John manager Darren Moon said: ‘At first everyone thought Johny had twisted an ankle as he fell awkwardly but when he did not move we realised it was a lot more serious.

‘Many of the players were stunned and really worried because he was drifting in and out of consciousness.

‘We contacted Johny’s two sisters and they went to the hospital last night. This morning I spoke him and he was released late last night and sent home to bed to rest for two or three days.’

The Jersey Football Combination Division I game was 1-1 at the time of the abandonment with St Ouen reserves having scored from the corner kick that led to the injury.

The JFC will now have to decide what action to take on the game, either leave the result stand, replay it or restart from the time of the abandonment.
