Netball: Guthrie offers helping hand

The Netball World Cup star returned to Jersey last week ahead of pre-season training with Northern Mystics in New Zealand, and after having her affiliation with Jets confirmed she is now thought to be in Linda Andrews’ plans for their Premier League 2 match against Telstars.

England caps: 51

Bronze at the 2011 World Championships and 2015 World Cup.

Team Bath (2007-2014): 4 Superleague titles

Northern Mystics (2014-present): ANZ Championship Rookie of the Year 2015

‘I’d be super excited if it was to happen,’ said the 25-year-old, who won bronze with England at the 2015 World Cup in Australia.

‘I grew up with them all and played a lot of netball with them while going through the development squads for the England team, so it will be like old times.’

With the 2016 ANZ season not starting until April, the former Team Bath Superleague captain is approaching the halfway mark of an eight-month break from the professional game – which began at the end of the World Cup in August. And, before returning to Auckland in early-December, she is hoping to help her childhood friends towards Premier 2 consolidation if the opportunity for game-time arises.

‘I’m just looking forward to being part of the team and trying to help them get a few wins, but it will also massively help my build-up before going back to New Zealand,’ Guthrie added.

Guthrie and Team Jets are leading a training workshop for children in school Years 5-7 before Sunday’s game, which starts at 3.30 pm. The Islanders, who have lost five of their opening seven matches, will be looking to continue their winning form having beaten high-flying Ryland last time out.
