Sport: Lighting the Touch paper!

The Island is due to host the event for the second time next July, and with almost 1,000 people expected to descend on our shores from 16 nations, planning – with the help of some of those involved in this year’s NatWest Island Games – is already well under way and excitement is starting to build.

‘The event will provide a fantastic opportunity for these guys to develop the sport locally,’ said assistant event manager Derek de la Haye, who is working alongside Jersey 2015 veterans Cliff Chipperfield and Claire Germain. ‘Event-led tourism has got to be something we seek to do more often … we have great facilities and want to use those.

‘We will work with European Touch to put on a fantastic event, and it will be great to have nearly 1,000 people coming to Jersey to participate in sport.’

JTA chairperson Rena Nelson said: ‘It will be a great event for us to be able to show the wider community the sport that we love. There’s going to be a great vibe here with lots of high level athletes playing, so to offer that to our players on our doorstep is exciting.

‘We have the structure in place from the Island Games, and to have the experience of key people from there on our management team is exceptional.’

The event, which will utilise eight pitches at Les Quennevais, is scheduled to take place from 7-10 July.
