Pitman, who spent time as a young boy being coached at United, scored Championship leaders Ipswich’s equalising goal in their 4-1 extra-time victory at Doncaster Rovers.
The 27-year-old found the net from ten yards in the second round tie, and was denied a possible hat-trick; striking the crossbar before Doncaster’s goalkeeper make an excellent save.
Former Muratti star Peter Vincenti’s cup hopes are over, however, as his League One Rochdale side went down 1-0 away to Championship side Hull City.
Ipswich will travel to Manchester United on Tuesday 22 September.
