Badminton: Jersey power past Guernsey to earn gold medal match

After topping their group with ease yesterday, Team Jersey set up a last four match with Guernsey which they won comfortably, taking the best of five matches 3-0.

In the opening men’s singles match, Jersey’s Mark Constable beat Jordan Trebert 21-6, 21-6 to give Jersey the perfect start.

That win was followed by another victory for Kerry Coombs-Goodfellow in the ladies’ singles tie. She defeated Charlotte Barnes 21-14, 21-12.

That meant that a win in the men’s doubles would give Jersey an unassailable 3-0 lead and the team of Constable and Alex Hutchings duly delivered, winning 21-10, 21-17 to ensure that Jersey badminton will win at least a silver medal in the team event.

They will face the winners of the match between Faroe Islands and the Isle of Man, which the Faroes are currently leading.

The final was due to take place at 8 pm on Tuesday.
