Football: Le Cornu takes St Brelade post

The 58-year-old accepted the position on Saturday and returns to management after a five-year break having previously coached Jersey under-16s for four years and spells with St Peter and Rozel Rovers before that.

Le Cornu said: ‘St Brelade have got a young side; they approached me and after thinking about it for a couple of days I thought: “why not?”

‘My aim is to look to improve a young side. Obviously you’ve got the two big guns in the Premiership in St Paul’s and Jersey Scottish who’ve got the cream of the players, so my goal is to use my experience and look to help St Brelade move forward a bit more.

‘I’ve been watching my lads play so I’m still involved with what has been going on and although the managerial offer came out of the blue a bit, I’m looking forward to another challenge.

‘It’s all happened quickly; I was approached at work last Wednesday and after two meetings with club officials I accepted the position on Saturday morning.

‘I think I can help by adding a bit of organisation to the team; as I say they are a fairly young side and if they can gel together and give me the enthusiasm then I’ll give them the experience.

‘St Brelade lacked goals last season but that’s a problem for many clubs because there are not a lot of strikers around at the moment.

‘We’ll try and get a few more players in, but at the end of the day we’ve got to go with what we’ve got and see where we can go from there.’

Le Cornu, manager at Cory Car Paints Ltd, will team up with former Island goalkeeper Martyn Le Blancq who was at St John FC a couple of years ago having previously assisted Le Cornu with Jersey U16s.

Le Cornu said: ‘We work together well; we bounce things off each other and it’s great to have Martyn alongside me because roles likes this you cannot do on your own.

‘St Brelade have great facilities, their squad has potential and it’s a case of trying to move them on a little bit further.’

St Brelade’s football section secretary Keith Taylor said: ‘Firstly I’d like to thank previous manager Gary Macdonald and Martin Mundy for their services to the club over the years and wish them well for the future.

‘We’ve had to move quickly to find a successor and after a couple of meetings with Keith we are delighted that he has accepted the position.

‘Keith’s track record in football is very good and to have someone of his calibre is fantastic and I’m confident the players will enjoy working with him.’
