Sailing: Youthful quartet named for Island Games

  • Four young Islanders in line for Games debut

JERSEY will have four fresh faces in their NatWest Island Games sailing squad this summer, with three teenagers being named following the final round of qualifiers last weekend.

Laser Standard rig sailors George Moisan (21) and Dylan Griffiths (19) have been given the nod for Jersey 2015 alongside Laser Radial rig qualifiers David Raimbault (16) and Nick Ellison (18), and the quartet will all be making their first Games appearance.

With the top two in each category from Jersey Sailing Association’s nine-race qualifying series being offered a spot on the four-strong team, Griffiths did enough to qualify for both by claiming two second-place finishes, but it was Moisan and Raimbault that led the way, and they have since been rewarded for their consistent performances since August.

‘And they are learning to cope with variables such as the tide, the wind, currents, waves and on top of that the tactics of other boats too.

‘It is an inexperienced team in comparison to what we’ve had over the last few years, but the youngsters are taking over from the older ones now … it is a young and exciting team.’

Island Games sailing will begin on Sunday 28 June in St Aubin’s Bay and finish with the final rounds on Thursday 2 July.
