Football: Petulla rings changes for Navy test

Petulla, who is being assisted by his son, Charlie, has named 17 players for Saturday’s lunch-time friendly at JTC Jersey Wanderers’ club ground, JTC Park.

7 March: Royal Navy – friendly (h)

26 March: Reds v Blues – trial

9 May: Royal Air Force – friendly (h)

17 May: Guernsey – Muratti (a)

27 June – 3 July: Island Games (h)

As is often the case when a new manager steps in, there are a host of changes for the trial game, with eight players who were in last season’s victorious Muratti squad being left out ahead of May’s Insurance Corporation Muratti and June’s NatWest Island Games in Jersey.

Petulla snr said: ‘Different managers have different opinions and I believe it’s a very strong squad when you consider some of the quality players that we’ve had to leave out.

‘Obviously those that have not made it this time are still in the frame for the future, so there is an incentive for those left out to continue to work hard and prove their worth in the coming weeks.

‘Charlie and I deliberated long and hard about the squad for this game and we are very pleased with it.

‘The level of effort and commitment have been excellent and we hope that the players can take that into the game on Saturday.’

There is still a question mark over the availability of striker Catarina Alves, the current women’s Footballer of the Year, due to work commitments. However, should Alves be work-tied, there will be no additions to the Jersey squad.
