Badminton: Promotion ‘deserved’ after Devon double

Level on points with second placed Hampshire ahead of the final round of the season, Jersey needed to match their rivals’ result to secure top spot, and strong performances in the opening singles on Saturday put them firmly in control.

Wins for Commonwealth Games players Mark Constable and Alex Hutchings in the men’s singles added to successes in the ladies’ singles, where Kerry Coombs-Goodfellow and Emily Temple-Redshaw both won their matches 2-0, and after extending this advantage to 8-0 during the first round of the doubles a 13-2 victory was secured.

Sunday’s encounter was a repeat of Saturday’s eleven-point success as Colin Hardwidge came into the side to partner Jon Southern and Moira Ashby in the men’s and mixed doubles, and captain Constable was pleased with the way his side went about getting the job done.

‘We started well and got on top of the match early on both days, not letting them have any kind of a look in,’ said Constable.

‘We didn’t take our foot off the pedal and it was a very professional performance by all.

‘The team have been great all year and thoroughly deserve the promotion.’
