THERE will be no women’s basketball in the Island Games in Bermuda this summer and the men’s tournament is hanging by a thread with just four teams currently entered.

In an attempt to boost numbers, the Guernsey Island Games Association will ask the Jersey and the Isle of Man Association’s to reconsider their decisions not to travel.

Jersey basketball made their decision not to take part as long ago as December 2011. It was made on the basis of the ongoing uncertainly of their sponsorship and fund raising.

GIGA liaison director Jon Marley is happy to ask Jersey to reconsider but he also criticises them for not showing the desire to travel, while expecting to host a full basketball tournament at the Jersey Games in 2015.

Yet more evidence that the decision to award the Games to Bermuda was not made with any of the athletes in mind and was purely for the benefit of "VIPs" wanting a nice jolly.

On the subject of basketball, what Jon Marley fails to realise is that basketball in Jersey isn't taken anywhere near as seriously as it is in Guernsey, where they are very passionate about it. Therefore, why on earth would a bunch of casual sportspeople pay over £2000 to take part in their pastime? I don't blame them for not going.

Anyway, from what I hear from other islands, this Games is in danger of becoming a non-event, or even cancelled.
