A record number of local athletes is expected to compete in next year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Commonwealth Games Association of Jersey president Alan Cross says that 40 or more Islanders will be taking part in the competition being held from 23 July to 3 August in 2014.

Jersey’s greatest turnout was at the 2006 Games in Melbourne, when 35 athletes made the trip, representing seven different sports.

That number was slightly down, to 31, for the 2010 Games in Delhi, but Mr Cross feels the ease of getting to Scotland will encourage more to take part.
