INTER-island rivalry will peak again next year when the annual Muratti Vase football competition takes place – complete with a new sponsor to its name.

Channel Islands company Insurance Corporation have signed a three-year deal to support the event which has been running since 1905. The historic battle resumes when Alderney host Jersey in the semi-final stage on Saturday 16 March, before the final in Guernsey on Sunday 5 May, the day after the ladies’ Muratti.

Phil Austin is thrilled with the development and is eagerly anticipating his first Muratti experience as Jersey Football Association president.

He said: ‘This sponsorship deal allows us to maintain the traditions and pedigree of the event properly. The Muratti is known as one of the most important events in the CI sporting calendar. Its place in history is well established and it remains a fiercely contested trophy, with inter-island pride very much on the line.'
