BRILLIANT sunshine, a light breeze and a bucketfull of personal bests – but few real surprises in yesterday’s Jersey Spartan AC’s Aztec half marathon.

Guernsey’s in-form Steve Dawes galloped away from the field to successfully defend the title he won last year – his third victory in the event and fourth triumph over the 13.1-mile distance in Jersey alone. He finished in 1hr 08 min 21 sec and was followed by Jersey's James Cunningham in a time of 1.15.22.

And no surprise in the ladies’ race either, with Jersey’s Jo Gorrod keeping up her extraordinary 100 per cent record of wins in the event – nine in all – again with an unchallenged solo run. She completed the course in 1.22.24, with Katie Thompson in second in 1.30.45.
