INTER-Island club cricket matches will be few and far between next summer following the folding of the Investec Channel Islands League.

The Guernsey Cricket Board, who handle the sponsorship, have decided to go their own way in terms of providing a better standard of weekend cricket for their players by way of a new four-team super league next summer and more regular island representative matches.

Jersey Cricket Board chairman Ward Jenner said: ‘We’ve not had much option in this matter, Guernsey have made their decision and we have to fall in line. Unfortunately there have been too many mismatches and that has not helped either island. It’s also been much more expensive for the Jersey teams as well because Guernsey travelled by boat while the Jersey teams had to go by plane.'

Erm... then travel by boat as well then! FFS.

The only problem with that Nick is that the boat timetables dont allow the Jersey teams to travel over to Guernsey, play a full match and return on the same day.

The Condor timetables changed halfway through the summer and meant that some of the Guernsey teams who had planned to come here by boat had to suddenly find flights at short notice. The cost of travelling by plane between the islands is about £1000 return and its clearly not a good use of money for either island when money is tight.

Wrecker

Can't the top 3 teams in each island from the previous year play in a CI Super League? Nice little round robin with lots of good cricket, so that the better players don't get too bored of local mediocrity. There is the issue of World League Status to focus on. That could come out of sponsorship and prize money.

Wrecker

One fundamental problem with that - the team that finished 4th last season misses out altogether and its better players who don't want to miss out would gravitate to the other 3 teams, which is totally counter productive.
