Girls who took sushi send apology

Images from CCTV footage recorded on Saturday 12 August at 2.20 am in Bento Sushi show the two girls entering the restaurant and taking items from the fridge.

The food was due to be donated to volunteers from Olio, a charity that collects food from supermarkets and restaurants that is past its best-before date but not the use-by date and distributes it to Islanders, the following day.

Davis Krivins, the restaurant’s director, appealed on Facebook after the theft, asking anyone who recognised the girls to get in touch. At the weekend, a letter of apology from the culprits was handed to the restaurant.

Mr Krivins said the girls were able to enter the restaurant in the early hours due to a technical fault with the door, which meant it was not locking. Staff were only made aware of the fault when they arrived the following morning to see that the fridge had been raided.

Mr Krivins said: ‘I think the girls must have just seen the light on in the fridge and decided to try the front door.

‘It wasn’t major things that were taken but it was items that we were saving to donate to a good cause.’

The restaurant received the letter and some money on Saturday. Mr Krivins said they would donate the money to a local charity.

On its Facebook page the restaurant said: ‘We would like to commend the girls on coming forward and apologising to us. We all do silly things when intoxicated and it takes a lot to admit and apologise. Our goal was to raise awareness that these things are not tolerated in our community, and are happy that you agreed and are sorry.

‘We were not after monetary compensation, the letter would have done it, all we needed was acknowledgement and apology. What we will do is donate the money to a local charity and hopefully this situation will actually have a positive outcome.’
