Public inquiry for holiday village plan

Entrepreneur Jonathan Ruff, the businessman behind the visitor attraction, wants to create a landscaped holiday park, with a mix of 27 two- and three-bedroom self-catering units, at Retreat Farm. The disused glasshouse complex is the largest in the Island.

The application also includes a proposal for a car park on a field.

Deputy Steve Luce said he had decided to hold the inquiry as the site, on the border of St Lawrence and St Mary, is in the Green Zone, where there is a presumption against development. If the development were to go ahead, he added, it would be a significant departure from the Island Plan.

The application for the holiday village has the support of Visit Jersey. Chief executive Keith Beecham has previously said the scheme would have a positive effect on the visitor economy by adding more beds and providing new jobs in the hospitality industry.
