Cyber-fraud warning after string of attacks

The Jersey Financial Services Commission has announced that it is aware of ‘at least three cases’ where fraudsters have mimicked the website of Island firms, as well as the signatures of their employees, and attempted to trick clients into sending them large sums of money.

The ‘impersonation attacks’ involve cyber-criminals registering a domain name which is almost identical to that of an organisation and then sending bogus email requests to their customers.

In one of the cases reported to the JFSC, an attempt to extort more than £450,000 was made by impersonating a company. The crime was detected, however.

The JFSC has said that the fraudulent emails included legitimate signatures to make them ‘appear more authentic’.

Any Islanders who believe that they may have been targeted by an impersonation attack should contact the States police on 612612 and email the Jersey Fraud Prevention Forum on scams500@police.je.

Any local companies which identify a cyber-fraud attempt should also notify the police as well as their JFSC supervisor.
