Jersey now has hundreds of hidden homeless, says shelter

Sean Power, the deputy chairman of the Sanctuary Trust, estimates that there are ‘hundreds’ of people living without a permanent residence in Jersey and the situation is only going to get worse.

This week the charity, which can house up to 25 men across two hostels at any one time, has had to turn people away because the demand is too high. He said that between two and five men are being turned away each week and they are calling on local businesses with spare rooms, such as hotels and guest houses, to get in touch.

Mr Power, who is a former States Deputy, said that he knows there are some people who are holding down part-time jobs while ‘sofa-surfing’ or sleeping in their vehicles because they cannot afford to pay rent.
