Customs: Facebook cigarette sellers risk fine or jail

Scores of tobacco-based goods are being advertised on social media every day, primarily on two Facebook groups; Jersey Tax Free Tobacco and Jersey tobacco share which have almost 2,000 members.

The JEP has learned that in many cases, sellers are flouting their duty-free allowances at the Airport and Harbour before selling the goods for profits of 50 per cent or more.

Offenders can face heavy fines, or even a prison term, if prosecuted.

Last year Customs officers seized excess duty-free items on 1,034 occasions, including 186,000 cigarettes and 112 kg of hand-rolling tobacco. The amount of duty evaded equated to about £92,000.
