Man fined for driving overloaded van

Joao Leandro Figueira Marques (43), of Route de Maufant, St Saviour, admitted driving with a dangerously heavy load, having a vehicle with dangerous bodywork and a defective light.

Centenier Philip Coffey said that Marques was driving a white Renault Master van west along Route du Fort on Saturday 17 June at about 4.40 pm when St Helier honorary police officers noticed the rear axle was heavily loaded, that the van base appeared to be close to the road and there was bodywork flapping loose.

As a result, they stopped the van and when they looked in the back they found a significant number of tools and heavy machinery.

They also noticed that the rear bumper was hanging off. The vehicle was taken to be weighed and it was found to be carrying a load of 4,620 kg, which was more than 1,000 kg heavier than the 3,500 kg maximum allowed for the model.

The defendant told the court that the reason the van load was so heavy was that he had just finished a job and had to remove tools.
