Condor alters ferry route after children hit by freak waves

A report by Guernsey’s Harbourmaster has found that the arrival of Condor Liberation, combined with the movement of a cruise ship, the Herm Trident V ferry and an unidentified yacht created the unusually high waves at La Vallette bathing pool near St Peter Port Harbour.

Six children were injured in the incident on the morning of 8 July.

Several suffered cuts or were left ill after swallowing sea water, and one suffered a panic attack.

CCTV will now be used to monitor the pool during arrivals and departures to help analyse the effectiveness of the new routing.

Additional signs pointing out the dangers have also been installed.

According to the report, at the time of the incident, Condor Liberation was making its final approach from the south, the cruise ship Adonia was leaving, the Herm Trident V was approaching the harbour from the north, while witnesses have also described a large motor yacht moving at speed.

Condor Liberation altered course towards the island once it had passed the cruise ship, which was south of the bathing pool, but it turned further than company guidelines.

‘While this deviation from company procedure is considered to theoretically contribute to an increased wave height of approximately 60cm at the pools, it is unlikely to have been the cause of the magnitude of wave reported and therefore other vessel movements are considered to have contributed to the incident experienced at the pools,’ the report by the Harbourmaster Chad Murray states.

In agreement with Mr Murray, Condor has amended approach procedures for high-speed craft during daylight arrivals between 1 May and 30 September.
