No designs on the top job, says Home Affairs Minister

The St Peter Deputy, who has been in the States since 2011, has confirmed she does plan to stand for election again in May and, if elected, is willing to consider ‘whatever job I am asked to do’.

However, while she hopes one day that Jersey will have a female Chief Minister she has no intention of throwing her hat into the ring.

Meanwhile the minister – a former BBC and ITV journalist – has also called on Islanders from all backgrounds, particularly women, to consider standing at the next election.

And she has offered to speak to anyone who may be thinking of putting themselves forward to offer her insight into the process and experience.

Speaking two weeks after Chief Minister Ian Gorst and Deputy Louise Doublet launched the States Assembly Diversity Forum, which has put getting more women into local politics as one of its top priorities, Deputy Moore said it was ‘absolutely necessary’ to address gender imbalance in the States.

‘The States Assembly should represent the community and therefore we need different people of different backgrounds to help us in our decision making. All we can do is encourage people really to put themselves forward and stand for election,’ she said. ‘I am happy to talk to anybody who is interested.’

She added: ‘I think particularly for people who may think of themselves as a minority voice it is quite daunting to put yourself forward as an independent candidate – I certainly found it very daunting and it doesn’t really get any easier, you are just grateful for everybody who will be a supporter. I am always amazed by the volunteers who come forward to help and the time they give.

‘I think we have a lot of work to do to encourage people to consider it, to understand that their views are wanted and that we are grateful if they come forward.’

Commenting on who she wants to see as Jersey’s next Chief Minister, she said: ‘I fully support Ian Gorst and believe that he is the right man for the job still and I’d like to see him continue. He is very able and the right person to lead us forward.’

Asked if Jersey will one day have a female Chief Minister, she added: ‘I certainly hope so, absolutely. But I am not sure that it will be me.’
