World first for air traffic controllers

The Airport is the first in the world to obtain the Air Navigation Services Provider certification.

Until now, under French accreditation formed in 1948, the Island was limited to managing the Channel Islands Control Zone – an area of 8,300 sq km and up to 20,000 feet.

However, Airport authorities are now able to approach air traffic control authorities in other European jurisdictions to offer their services – including managing air traffic, providing meteorological services and overseeing the management of communication and navigation systems.

Representatives from the facility travelled to the joint US Federal Aviation and EASA Safety Conference in Brussels last week to be presented with certificates confirming the new status.

Stephen Driscoll, Airport director, described the certification as a significant achievement for Ports of Jersey.

In order to obtain the certification, Jersey Air Traffic Control officials had to complete a number of intensive safety, quality and training audits.
