Gorst vows to give 100% as he survives no confidence vote

Following about seven hours of debate on Tuesday, the proposition, brought by Constable Chris Taylor, was heavily defeated 34 votes to 13.

Speaking during the debate, Senator Gorst, who topped the Senatorial poll in 2014, said: ‘I believe in this Island and believe in our future, but it will not happen by accident. I give 100 per cent, and I ask Members: is that too much, is that too much? I cannot give less, I cannot give less nor will I. Don’t ask me too.

‘Our futures are at stake. Only vote for me if you want me to continue giving 100 per cent.’

During his closing speech, Senator Gorst said he had been accused of not being a leader and taking too much leadership, of ‘working too hard and not working hard enough’, and not looking at the picture and mico-managing.

Turning his attention to ‘shadowy figures’ operating on the political stage, he added: ‘Every member of this Assembly is bigger and better than that. It cannot go on.

‘It does not serve our Island and community well. If it means we have to be more open about disagreement around the Council of Ministers’ table, if it means I need to be more forthright, then so be it.

‘This Island deserves better than what it has had over the past ten days.’
