Public sector staff headcount drops

The States Employment Board annual report for 2016 shows that ten people successfully applied to join the public sector on a salary of £100,000 or more last year.

Six of the new appointments were in the Health Department and included a consultant ophthalmologist (eye doctor), primary care medical director and an oncology consultant.

The exact level of their salaries was not detailed in the report.

During 2016, the total staff headcount in the public sector was reduced from 6,941 to 6,665 workers as part of a cuts programme to make savings.

The biggest reduction was in the Education Department, which lost 184 staff, but this was partially due to a large number of the department’s sports and culture employees being transferred to the Economic Development Department.

The largest department at the end of 2016 was Health with 2,564 followed by Education with 1,949 employees.

The report says that the States Employment Board gave ‘continued attention’ to public sector reform and workforce modernisation during the year.

It says: ‘The board recognised the significant contribution made by the trade union and staff associations in engaging with the workforce modernisation programme.’
