Island quilters asked to help Grenfell Tower blaze survivors

Following an appeal launched by the London Modern Quilt Guild for needleworkers nationwide to come together to make quilts, local ‘stitchers’ have sprung into action.

The Jersey Modern Quilt Guild is organising a quilt-making session at St Saviour’s Parish Hall between 10 am and 4 pm on Sunday.

Organiser Sue Bone said: ‘We have been horrified by the recent tragedy in London at Grenfell Tower and want to do something to help. We realise that Sunday is Father’s Day but think of the fathers who have lost family and friends as well as their home. We are also calling for donations of cotton fabric and wadding.

‘As you can imagine, the situation is still uncertain at the moment, the key in the short term is to get completed quilts to people as soon as possible.’

Materials will be supplied on Sunday, but donations of materials and already made quilt blocks are welcome. And needleworkers with sewing machines are invited to bring them along.

Aid has been pouring into the Royal London of Borough of Kensington and Chelsea since hundreds of people had to flee their homes in the early hours of Tuesday. Most have lost everything and have been left with only the clothes they were wearing.

The quilts made on Sunday will be sent to the London Modern Quilt Guild for distribution.
