Falklands remembered

Two wreaths were laid at the Cenotaph to remember the 255 British military personnel and three Falkland islanders who lost their lives during the ten-week war between Argentina and the United Kingdom which began on 2 April 1982.

The conflict, which lasted a total of 74 days, ended when Argentina surrendered on 14 June 1982.

On Wednesday two Island veterans who fought in the Falklands attended the service.

David Power (53), who served in the Royal Navy for nine years and is a member of the Royal British Legion Riders Branch, said: ‘I was only just 18 years old when I served in Falklands and I was scared.

‘A war situation is not anything you would wish on anyone but your training kicks in and you do what you are there to do. It’s only when you have time to reflect that you think: “How did I just do that?”’

Paul Dowden (58), who also served in the conflict, said it was important that ex-serviceman gathered in Jersey to remember those who lost their lives.

He said: ‘We need to make sure we remember the small wars because they are part of our history and they will get lost if we don’t carry on talking about them.’
