Driver sent text ’16 seconds’ before fatal collision

Advocate Matthew Jowitt, defending, said 16 seconds was an ‘awfully long time’ for his client Rebekah Le Gal to still be distracted from ‘simply pressing send on a text’.

It is the prosecution’s case that the 39-year-old did not see Clinton Pringle in the road outside the Millennium Town Park as she was preoccupied with the text.

But Advocate Jowitt said that if his calculations were correct it rendered the Crown’s case ‘factually incorrect’.

Mrs Le Gal denies a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

The prosecution case, which began on Monday, was due to conclude today. Mrs Le Gal is then expected to give evidence as part of the defence.

The trial continues.
