Firefighters tackle third barbecue blaze in a week

The man managed to move the flaming cylinder away from his wooden fence in his garden in Gorey and call the Fire and Rescue Service.

It is the third barbecue fire in the last week.

Watch commander Toby Aubert said: ‘The cylinder was flaming when we got there, but fortunately the owner had managed to move it away from the fence, otherwise it could have escalated.

‘The message we want to get out is for people to ensure their gas hose is not perished.

‘It is also important that when they connect it they use a spanner and not a metal gripper as they will not get the purchase to ensure it is properly tightened.’

Firefighters managed to stop the flow of gas, and Jersey Gas were called out to dispose of the cylinder.

No one was injured.
