Concern over abuse inquiry report timing

The Independent Jersey Care Inquiry has announced that the report will be released at 3 pm on Monday 3 July. Interested parties, including those who gave evidence, will be allowed to see the report two hours before it is released to the public and media.

Deputy Russell Labey said that the timing of the release, along with the fact that the panel will not be answering questions or giving interviews, would not allow people to properly understand the content of the report.

Chief Minister Ian Gorst said that the procedures, including the publication of the report, were set by the panel but that he would raise the concerns.

He said: ‘It is not appropriate for me to interfere in the inquiry. I have, however, been asked questions in this Assembly and Members have asked me to relay them back to the inquiry.

‘I have no doubt that the inquiry will be made aware of the concerns of media organisations and I am prepared to do that.’

He added that he would ‘be more than happy to have a conversation’ with inquiry representatives but that the independence of the panel must not be compromised.

Senator Gorst said: ‘For some it will be traumatic to hear these stories. We must make sure this abuse does not happen as far as possible in the future.’

The report will also be published on the inquiry website at 3 pm on the same day.
