Engineers test promenade plans

The Infrastructure Department wants to build a raised wooden platform for bikes and walkers over the French Harbour, between the old La Folie Inn and La Collette, to improve road safety.

An application was submitted to the Planning Department in February, but it has yet to go before the Planning Committee. However, exploratory engineering works have taken place to see if the project is viable. Now, another application, to drill bore holes into the beach slips at both ends of the French Harbour, has been submitted as well.

Historic building consultant Antony Gibb has submitted the latest application following consultation with boat owners and heritage organisations earlier in the spring.

‘We need to know where the bedrock is, so this is a preliminary application to do some trials to see how deep the piles will need to go,’ he said.

If it is approved, the walkway will be raised above the harbour, adjacent to the main road, to maintain access for vehicles and to allow boat owners to park underneath.
