Politician’s agri-tourism plan gets the green light

An application from St Helier Deputy Richard Rondel to diversify into the agri-tourism business by converting a barn at Les Petits Canons, close to his family-run Rondel’s Farm Shop, have been approved by the Planning Committee.

Keith Beecham, chief executive of Visit Jersey, said that schemes aimed at diversifying the Island’s tourist accommodation will play an important part in helping his department achieve the aim of attracting one million holidaymakers a year by 2030.

Deputy Rondel first applied for the self-catering units in 2015 but was refused permission the following year, when the historic buildings team, which maintains a watching brief over the Island’s listed buildings, raised objections over the scale of the proposed units.

Having taken their comments on board, he submitted a new application in March.

In addition to the self-catering accommodation, Deputy Rondel was also granted permission to create two units of residential accommodation in the existing main farmhouse and adjacent cottage.
