Talks fail to halt Gorst no-confidence motion

St John Constable Chris Taylor announced earlier this week that he intended to lodge a no-confidence motion in Chief Minister Ian Gorst next week and claimed between 15 and 20 backbenchers were supporting the move.

On Thursday afternoon Mr Taylor met Deputy Chief Minister Andrew Green to discuss his reasons for the proposed motion. A further meeting is set for next week, when the Constable is due to meet Senator Gorst, who is currently out of the Island.

Mr Taylor said: ‘It was intended as a private meeting, and I will honour that. We were able to express our opinions to each other. We had a frank exchange of views and what I will say is, nothing has changed my mind.

‘They requested the meeting and I agreed – any Member or minister who wants to inquire about what I am doing and why I am doing it is more than welcome to do so.

‘We spoke about the vote of no confidence and the build-up of issues that have led to the position we now find ourselves in.’

Mr Taylor said that concerns about the Jersey Innovation Fund, the delays to and ultimate withdrawal of the hospital funding debate, as well as the reappointment of Senator Philip Ozouf to ministerial government had prompted him to pursue a no-confidence vote in the Chief Minister.
