Man accused of murder appears in court

Michael Charles Brown (52) is accused of murdering John McCarthy at Vauxhall Gardens in October.

At a previous hearing, Brown pleaded guilty to an alternative charge of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and the authorities are considering whether to accept the plea.

During Friday’s Royal Court hearing, the defendant was told that the case would be adjourned for a further two weeks while lawyers wait for a report to be finalised.

Mr McCarthy was found fatally injured outside Vauxhall Gardens by a member of the public and was pronounced dead a short time later.

Brown was remanded into custody and is due to appear again on 16 June.
