Guernsey ‘foolish’ not to test an inter-island ferry service

Sarnian Deputy Matt Fallaize said that Jersey is far more willing to invest in infrastructure and investment projects than Guernsey, and added that it had been ‘foolish’ not to back plans to underwrite a new ferry link between the two jurisdictions.

Jersey and Guernsey had been considering using the 41-seater Gardian 14 ferry in a trial service over the summer, which would have been run by Condor. The plan fell through after Guernsey refused to fund their share and underwrite part of the trial.

Deputy Fallaize, who is the president of Guernsey’s States Assembly and Constitution Committee, said that the idea of a shuttle-style service was popular in Guernsey and politicians were now regretting their decision not to back the plans.

‘It was a very modest level of investment for a service where we know there is a reasonable demand. It would have allowed us to test the level of demand for the service and see if there was an appetite for long-term investment.

‘I think there was a lot of local support for it, and the government is now starting to realise that,’ he said.
