Social security contributions soar

Social Security chief officer Ian Burns said that the improvement in Jersey’s economy over the last few years and the introduction of the department’s Back to Work initiative has meant that more Islanders are now working and fewer are claiming welfare.

The total amount of social security contributions made by Islanders climbed from £184 million in 2013 to £204 million last year, statistics produced by the department show.

Mr Burns said that the number of income support claimants and the level of contributions have both moved in a positive direction as the number of jobs has increased.
