Taxi drivers call off strike after last-minute talks

Tensions grew between the Infrastructure Department and the Jersey Taxi Drivers’ Association last week after Deputy Noel unveiled changes to tariffs – including maximum fare charges.

The changes – which are due to come into force tomorrow – led to taxi drivers striking last Thursday. Following further issues over the bank holiday weekend taxi drivers once again threatened strike action today with Mick Tostevin, president of the Jersey Taxi Drivers’ Association, accusing Deputy Noel of plunging the industry into ‘crisis’.

He added that prolonged industrial action was likely unless negotiations about an overhaul of taxi regulations were reopened.

Following the strike on Thursday the minister put an interim ministerial decision in place which allowed private hire cabs to pick up from public ranks over the bank holiday weekend with signs put in place telling passengers that company cabs could use the rank.

The JEP tried to contact Mr Tostevin after the meeting but he was unavailable for comment.
