Letter to the Editor: Politicians must be given all relevant information

From my experiences throughout a long career as an accountant, I know only too well the grief which can result for those trying to present or push for honest and realistic projections, budgets, project plans, deadlines and so on, where these go against the prevailing ‘political’ line. But, in the long run, decisions based on substantially over-optimistic figures or plans often come back to bite. This is usually in the form of large unexpected losses, serious cost overruns, or other failings which could and should have been foreseen. These hurt stakeholders ranging from employees, shareholders and customers through to taxpayers and the public at large.

Good governance requires that our States Assembly or ministers responsible for government decisions are in a position to carry out proper due diligence beforehand. Relevant and honest information must not be held back from them and, where necessary, they must be able to challenge proposals (such as through the Scrutiny process) before deciding on them.
