Bereaved sister launches a sea safety campaign

The campaign comes after an inquest heard this week that a 34-year-old Polish man was found drowned on St Ouen’s beach last year having arrived in Jersey just two weeks earlier.

And today, with the start of the half-term holidays, Jersey Coastguard has also reminded people to take necessary precautions and seek advice before setting off to the coast, especially those unfamiliar with Jersey waters.

Following her sister’s death, Annie Noble and her family have been working with the RNLI to create the Jersey Water Safety Campaign, which will provide advice from organisations such as the Royal Life Saving Society and Jersey Met.

Miss Noble’s sister, Joy Godfray, tragically drowned in ‘treacherous conditions’ on 20 August a day before her 32nd birthday.

As part of the campaign a ‘Joy Water Safety’ card which will feature a number of tips for people visiting the beach, such as advising children to stay with an adult and to look at the warning flags before entering the sea, is to be delivered to primary and secondary schools on the Island.

Local swimming business Apnea have funded 5,000 cards.
