Airmen’s families sought by Société

The history society is to receive a donated copy of Men of the Battle of Britain – A Biographical Directory of the Few, which is regarded as the standard reference source for information about the 2,490 Allied airmen who served in the battle.

Those who took part in the battle – which was fought between the RAF and Luftwaffe in the skies above south-east England in the summer and autumn of 1940 – became known as ‘The Few’ after wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill praised their bravery.

The men of Fighter Command emerged victorious and by late September the threat of German invasion was over.

Société librarian Anna Baghiani said that the book is being donated by Fighter Command historian Geoff Simpson, and that she wanted to invite families of airmen to attend a handover ceremony in July.

The airmen with Island connections mentioned in the book are Harold Bird-Wilson, Horatio Chandler, Philip Cox, Robert Dafforn, Frederick Dixon, Ralph Don, Neville Doughty, David Evans, Harold Fenton, John Gibson, Douglas Grice, Glyn Griffiths, Giles Guthrie, Richard Hogg, Gerald Holder, Eric Howarth, James Lacey, Kenneth Manger, Edward Marsh, Peter O’Byrne, Eric Parkin, Geoffrey Pittman, Jack Ross, Laurence Smith, James Storrar, Fraser Sutton, Edmund Sylvester and Robert Woodward.
