Six-year term for £1 million cannabis smuggler

Shane Lee Ray was stopped by Customs officials as he got off the ferry from Portsmouth in January.

On inspection, Customs officers found 60 wrapped packages hidden in the roof of the hatchback he had arrived in. The estimated street value of the 57.7 kg of cannabis was between £867,000 and £1.15 million, the court heard.

Ray, from High Wycombe, pleaded guilty to one count of drug importation and was jailed for six years and three months by the Royal Court. The court heard that the 29-year-old had left his car parked somewhere overnight for it to be filled with the drugs by a third party.

Pushing for a seven-year jail term, Crown Advocate David Hopwood, prosecuting, said that an officer noticed that the felt lining the ceiling of the vehicle appeared to have been tampered with.
