Potato competition growers lift bumper crops and prizes

Every year schools, parish constables, WI members and media organisations enter the competition celebrating the Island’s world-famous product.

Prizes in each category are awarded to the entrant who has the heaviest potatoes and the most in their bucket.

This year, 32 schools took part in the contest, with Bel Royal Nursery winning the heaviest crop award with a batch weighing in at 1.7 kg.

Meanwhile, d’Auvergne School’s gardening club, 3WA, won in the ‘most tubers’ category, with 50 potatoes, and St Luke’s School Year 2 were the runners-up with 49.

In the Channel Islands Co-operative Society section, between each of its stores and staff who work at Co-op House in Don Street, St Peter Grand Marché won both the ‘heaviest’ and the ‘most tubers’ categories, with 61 potatoes weighing a total of 1.374 kg.

This year’s competition took place at Grouville Parish Hall and was judged by Genuine Jersey vice-chairman Peter Tabb.
