Evicted couple say they’re heartbroken

David and Helga Eves were given an extended eviction notice in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday which allows them to stay in their La Collette low-rise flat until 5 July. They were first served an eviction notice in February.

The couple are among a number of residents who will have to be rehomed before Andium Homes demolishes the existing low-rise flats at La Collette and builds 147 new properties in their place. It is expected that work will begin at the end of July.

Mr and Mrs Eves have been offered five alternative properties by Andium Homes, but have rejected all of them, saying they are not ‘suitable for their needs’.

An assessment by the Affordable Housing Gateway, which manages the waiting list for those registered for social housing, states that a one-bedroom property is suitable for the couple, who currently live in a two-bedroom unit.

Representing Andium in court yesterday, Advocate Dionne Gilbert said: ‘Andium have tried to work with Mr Eves and have offered him five properties, all of which have been rejected. The properties have all been suitable, from our point of view.

‘We are still willing to try to house the couple, but there needs to be a respectable approach on both sides and to date that hasn’t happened.’
