Dog walkers may face maximum limits under proposed new laws

St John Constable Chris Taylor is currently leading a project to review laws relating to dogs, including how they are licensed, fouling laws and how many animals can be under the care of dog walkers at any one time. A limit of six is currently being considered, as is a requirement for all dog walkers to be licensed.

The rules around dogs on beaches are also being looked at, although Mr Taylor said he believes the current situation where dogs have to be on a lead on beaches in the summer months between 10.30 am and 6 pm is ‘probably about right’.

The Constable, who is working on behalf of the Constables’ Committee and has been consulting with various interested parties, including the JSPCA, to lodge a proposition with the States, hopefully before the summer recess, recommending a number of changes to various laws that relate to dogs.
