Planning to rule on foghorn removal

The States body has applied to renovate the building – nearly a year after the 40-year-old horn was decommissioned – following consultation with mariners.

It was decided in June last year that the foghorn, which was used in foggy conditions to warn ships that they were close to shallow reefs, was no longer needed in an age of radar and GPS.

If the application is approved, Ports of Jersey will remove the existing foghorn and restore the fibreglass roof.

Peter Lawrence, marine operations manager at Ports of Jersey, said that the original horn from 1933 would be maintained as an item of visual interest.
